McKeesport, PA (September 5, 2007) — The relationship between Girl Scouts and musical instruments is not easily recognizable. However, Girl Scout Kristen Bobuk bridged that gap and earned “The Girl Scout Gold Award” in the process.
Bobuk collected instruments from the community that needed repairs done to them. Her plan was to learn how to fix these instruments and donate them back to deserving students in her community.
“I chose this project because I love music, and because the band has made me into the person I am today,” said Bobuk. “I want to give other kids the opportunity to join band and have the same experiences I have had.”
With the assistance of Progressive Music instrument repair technician, Theresa Leszcynski, Bobuk spent time at Progressive Music this past summer to learn how to fix the instruments she had collected.
“Theresa put up with me asking numerous questions and would fix things after I broken them again. She even taught me the best way to treat burns from an open flame,” noted Bobuk. “After the ice was broken, we had a lot of fun working together in the shop, and she even trusted me to help with instruments from Progressive’s rental pool, and other schools’ instruments!”
After the instruments were fixed, Bobuk donated them to the two middle schools in the Belle Vernon Area School District as well as the high school where she is in the band and plays soccer.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout ages 14-17 may earn. Someone once described The Gold Award as being “what you really want to be remembered for” in Girl Scouting. Approximately 3,000 Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scout Award annually. The represents only six percent of registered Girl Scouts.
Congratulations to Kristen on the award and all her hard work.
